Right, I'm gathering quotes to get my living room decorated and it's proving a minefield. One company seems super cheap but their quote is just a single line. Another is three times the price, with a huge list of things included – but I can't tell if half of it's necessary! It makes you wonder, are any of these 'transparent quotes' that companies advertise any more than just marketing waffle? Is it possible to find a decorator who'll actually explain what they're doing and why, without trying to rip you off? I'm based near Clapham Common, if that makes a difference. Any advice appreciated before I lose my mind!

I know exactly what you mean – it's so frustrating when you can't compare quotes properly. It's definitely worth digging deeper and asking for a full breakdown. When we were getting our flat done, we had a good experience with painters and decorators South London. What stood out to me was their willingness to explain every single item on the quote, from the cost of the paint to the time allowed for surface preparation. You could even ask them about the brands of materials they plan to use because some are better quality than others and this can inflate or deflate cost. Good surface prep should always be listed, a lot of decorators skip this step which can result in paint cracking or peeling in a short amount of time. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions!
